Eleven minutes and 15 seconds: that is how long it took the girls of Eight Seven Central to take down the FAMOUS Emmenecker Challenge from Jethro’s BBQ. While they did cheat and split the beast of a sandwich three ways, 6lbs of fried-delish isn’t an easy task for even the manliest of men. Jethro’s has been a great client to work with and they never disappoint when it comes to great food.

We’ve gone GREEN…with the help of our neighbors in the east village, RecycleMe Iowa!!!  RecycleMe Iowa is a doorstep recycling service, that caters to apartments, condos, and small businesses, as well as indoor and outdoor events. They also do waste/recycling consultations along with education!

“It’s not fair,” I thought, “for us to throw money indiscriminately toward a faceless organization that passively sends a few extra visitors to our website, while Jeremy receives nothing but an increased workload for actively promoting what we do.”

“Screw that.”

That’s when it occurred to me to take the money we are “supposed” to be spending on marketing and start spending it on employees instead. What if we let everyone vote on how to spend that money instead of dictating from the top? Over the next couple weeks we added a few stipulations: one half of one percent of our sales would go into the Fun Budget; all proposals would be due the first Wednesday of the month, with votes taking place a week later; unused funds would be rolled over into the next month, etc.

So on the first Wednesday of April, most people came to the table with ideas for what to spend our newfound cash on. Suggestions included an NBA Jam Tournament Edition Arcade Game, a neon sign of our logo, a hat rack, a full size refrigerator, and a hit man, among others. The following week, our sensibility was on display as we voted for the refrigerator.

Last month we voted to finish what we started and built out a kitchenette. Now, with the pragmatic things out of the way, we’re all looking forward to this month’s vote.

I’m pushing for a lifetime supply of ramen noodles.

Have you always wondered how our amazing screen printers do what they do, well this First Friday you will have the opportunity to print a t-shirt of your choice and be guided through the process! We will be featuring art work by our new summer intern Curtis Poortinga; a modern take on the myth of Hades and Persephone. There will be a pre-selected variety of American Apparel t-shirts available to purchase and print on for only $5 per shirt, in addition to our regular stocked shirts for $10 each.

We will also be featuring cans of the new Sidekick Kolsch from one of our favorite breweries, out of Knoxville, Iowa, Peace Tree Brewing Co.

Presses will be prepped and beer will be cold at approximately 5:00pm.
