#sidehustleproject, pt. II – Levi Biel, Screenprinter/Artist at Eight Seven Central for (2 years). I am most excited about giving my life to personal creative efforts, because I believe creating and cultivating personal expression will elevate society. I am having an Art Show of the body of work known as Corruptionfest at the Lift OPENING MAY 5 here in Des Moines at the @dmlift. Corruptionfest deals with many things, including: the conundrums of professional life, AND the destruction, confusion, and delusion stemming from greed. Stop in for a cocktail and ask me tough questions – lets make things happen, baby…. I am very excited about creating a self-printed comic book called “The Demonslayer”, an attempt at self healing through metaphor and storytelling…also for #sell !! …. The Arterrarium is a “permanent popup” store right here in DSM (11th and Cherry st.) “2017 – year of Art and Plants” We sell local and regional artists work on consignment AND plants (with handmade planters) to the hordes of people who are looking for these items! If all goes according to the plan we will be open by mid May…. Sitsirts is an experimental T-shirt and fashion clothing line. The mission is to experience fun and freedom in production and marketing, and not become slave to it…. Building and woodworking is in my blood, I am building a ton of modular wooden pieces and calling them “Temple shelves” They can be stacked in many ways to hold up things in your house. Get a piece of the temple at the Art terrarium or get everything i do @marketdayiowa (Saturday May 20th Capital square DSM). Learn more about my ongoing projects here: @corruptionfest @art_terrarium and @sitsirts
Long Post Alert – #thesidehustleseries. What most people don’t know about Eight Seven Central is that it really started as a side hustle for us (Owners Zach and Ben), where we worked half days at the shop without drawing a paycheck for the first two years. We wanted to build a workplace that would attract and develop great people, with the primary goal of making Des Moines a more beautiful place to live. Within our four walls, we do that by embracing fundamental design and screen printing principals, not taking shortcuts day in and day out, and hiring the most creative people we can find. We lived the side hustle and it’s become a main-hustle; this is us drinking beer and relaxing because we have made it. Right. One of the best (and worst) things about great creative people is that after their day-job, they don’t shut off. When they aren’t here they can be found outside of our walls creating art, music, leather goods, small businesses, podcasts, baked goods, furniture, and various other things that make the world worth living in. Like most mid-westerners, they tend not to be very self-promoting but a lot of this stuff is too good to keep quiet. Follow along for #thesidehustleseries.
So our dear friend Aaron Thien has cancer. He’s also probably your dear friend because Des Moines is a pretty small town. His wife, Keri, worked here for a while until she resigned a few months ago to help take care of her family. We are pretty depressed around here, so we made his face into t-shirts. Seriously, he’s a great guy who has a really good sob story. He’s a great husband. He has two little kids. He teaches under-privileged kids. He just had a golf ball cut out of his brain and he’s still smiling about it. He’s the best. Buy the shirt in the bio or send him a text and tell him you love him. #frackcancer
A few pics from yesterday’s groundbreaking event for The Foundry, a huge project in Valley Junction that will house a new distillery, beerhall, and commercial kitchen. We’re proud of the work we’ve done to develop a cohesive identity set for the Foundry building and two of its future tenants, the Hall and the Kitchen. Watch for the space to open around this Fall and into next year. We’ve been really excited to be a part of this; surely a future Des Moines Area hot spot. #thefoundrydsm #desmoines #groundbreaking #graphicdesign #identity #thehalldsm #thekitchendsm #foundrydistillery #beer #spirits #87c #eight7central
Over the weekend we hosted a screen printing workshop for a few of the artists that will be featured in the upcoming Pedal Art Poster Show. We had so much fun we forgot to take pictures, but here was the print that came out of it. Mark your calendars for May 19th for the seventh annual show. Poster by our own @dustinedle and @corruptionfest.
It’s always a thrill to see things come together after hours behind the scenes working with such talented folks. A big congratulations is in order for our friends at @lamiebakery on the opening of La Mie Elevate. We can not recommend it enough. If your startup or business has design, branding, or print needs, give us a shout. We’d love to hear from you!
